Phil Chandler: Barefoot Beekeeper
Великобритания
Добавлен 24 июн 2009
Mostly about 'balanced beekeeping' in top bar and other hives, which is the negotiated space between 'leave alone' or 'natural' beekeeping and the more exploitative forms of beekeeping. If you want to have bees around you primarily for their own sake, and also because of their pollination services and because you would like some honey from time to time, you may well find yourself at home here. Great to see your back again
Thanks for sharing this Phil!! It’s called baby oil over here as well.
Your a hoot… no squeaking babies
Dear Phil my mixture Is beeswax and olive oil. Thank you so much for all your great advice.❤
You are so welcome!
Bee bread tool is so cool.......
Thank you Phil I’m getting ready to bring my new grandson home today and rub him down with a bit of oil and wax to keep him from squeaking. Good information and hope to use more of it.
Do you offer your own beeswax for sale, Phil?
I really don't have enough to spare after making boot polish, wood enhancer and candles!
Thanks Phil. Very useful information.
Very interesting,very useful.

Thanks.
You're welcome
Where can I purchase one
@@Majorme2 link in description
Thanks
Is it possible that the honey absorbs moisture from the hive before capping. ??
@@Majorme2 the bees are doing their level best to remove water up to the point of capping the honey.
Foarte interesant. Multumim. 👍🐝🐝🐝
the males are yellow and black only the females are black and yellow : )
The second tool is called a cell punch, theres a few vids on you tube on the method.. seems like a good method if you are ham fisted like me... or if your hands are too shakey for grafting.
The 2nd tool is called an apple corer, and is available in decent kitchen shops in a variety of styles.
Doesn’t look substantial enough to core an apple though.
@@timan2039 We had one just like that which lasted through my entire childhood growing up in a house with an extensive orchard. I've no idea what happened to it after I left home, so maybe it wasn't substantial enough to last more than ten-plus years.
Nice to see you long time hope everything going good
honesty is ALWAYS the best policy, 👍👍
I love your video’s. Do you feed your bees right before fall? I started my hive in April with about 5000 bees, brood, pollen, and comb.
Can you recommend a full bre suit brand?
How does a hinged foof accomodate a super on top of the brood box?
It's clear that Americans don't like these hives - they're cheap, ugly and you can't order them from Amazon... . Thanks for the video. I have learned and applied so much from you over the years.
Mabey just loosen the flow hive frames free of propolis every month or two and check for fully capped frames when normal harvest time is there and turn the key on only the fully capped frames.
2015 Founding Supporter here. Harvested 14 quarts from my original 6 frame Flow yesterday. Didn't kill a single bee. You are far too rough on your bees for my liking. I have never had to remove my frames from the box as you did. Only after removing the entire box for winter have I needed to remove any flow frames for inspection etc... IMHO bee husbandry requires gentleness and kindness. Bees deserve it!
@@rikardoneubauer3128 I'm glad you made it work for you.
This was hard to watch as a noob. Why no smoke? Who not shake them off why use grass, who no suit from the start you seem to have made them mad 🤣
Hi Phil. Have you got any videos on winter preparation? Thanks
How to smoke bees out of the attic/Utube
Good to see you back making videos! If your looking for a project I'd love to see someone attempting a well insulated Kenyan Top bar hive with thermal mass inside. Cheers. Having a go with polestyrene but not sure how to make it mouse proof
I have had mouse damage on poly hives and it's pretty much impossible to deter them completely. Thanks for the challenge though, I will give that some thought!
What about mice and rat chewing and making nests in the foam? If I leave a stack of polystyrene anywhere they make nests real quick
What is the purpose of the angle or v shape … rather than a box shape.
Balls of steel fella!
Great informative video, Thanks
Fascinating, I’m thinking of setting up a hive. Just to help the bees along. I think I might have been at school with you!
Hey Colin, yes KHVIII and I remember you well. Where are you now?
@@BarefootBeekeeper Hi, Forgive me my tardy response. I hadn’t picked up that you’d replied! I’m living in West Yorkshire, Hebden Bridge. A lovely area, but exceedingly wet.
Ah yes, probably even wetter than my place in Devon!
Well said thanks for the information Phil.

Great tool! Thanks!
Yep! That's what I use. I have several other "normal" ones, but I love the painter's multi-tool as a beekeeping tool.
Why does he cover his head but not worried about his hands?
@@66gmoney I'm not bothered by a sting or two on my hands
Ehh, just... why?
I have thought of using this material too but my concern has been propolis...if using a hive too to get rhe lid unstuck, i imagine youll pierce the thin foil membrane. Also, lightning??
Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🙏 😊 ❤I appreciate you!! Your videos are awesome. I love the top bar hive nuke idea! And all the top bar modifications and feeder suggestions!!!! Fascinating stuff
wax moth eats it way thrugh!
Hopefully, wax moth won't be an issue.
Hello Michael, im thinking of going with a Japanese pile hive, would you know if western bees prefer to build up or down, Japanese add the empty boxes to the bottom, TIA jimmy
Bees naturally build downwards, but will store honey above the brood, which is why western hives are supered above brood boxes (Latin super = above). Some hive designs, such as the Warré, require boxes to be added below, but that means lifting all the other boxes...
A great and wonderful Idea to get best design barre hivebee
Lots of great info thank you Phil.
Well done 👍🏽❤️❤️❤️
My experience with this foam board is that it will be infiltrated by ants eventually. They love the stuff.
Interesting. I will look out for that. I doubt they will be able to penetrate the aluminium tape, however.
